SELF CARE SOCIETY

September 9, 2021

Society today is obsessed with ‘Self Care’. Everywhere you look we are surrounded by dozens of accounts on social media telling us we should take time out, TVs shows and adverts for products to help us ‘look after ourselves’. But there’s one very simple thing we should all be doing to keep ourselves healthy and happy.

You wouldn’t leave the house without brushing your hair (unless of course you’re going for that ‘just got out of bed’ look) so why do people miss brushing their teeth once or sometimes even twice a day? Looking after your teeth is the simplest form ‘Self Care’ we can do!

Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day helps to keep your enamel strong and protect against those unattractive and sometimes painful cavities. On top of that, flossing at least once a day helps ensure the plaque doesn’t build up on those in-between areas and cause redness, bleeding and bone loss, all of which are super unappealing and unpleasant side effects of gum disease.

The worst of it is that the failure to properly care for our oral health can result in losing teeth altogether and that’s just the tip of the iceberg – gum disease has been linked to diabetes, heart disease and even dementia.

Coming back from tooth loss alone can be time–consuming, expensive and disheartening enough but diabetes and dementia are not so easily overcome! So before you spend hundreds of pounds on weight loss shakes, hair appointments and expensive spa days, think about whether you are caring for yourself and your oral health in the simplest ways first.

Self Care is caring for the whole body, not just the bits you see on the outside – so invest in your smile and keep it healthy and whole!
