Brighten your smile

Day-to-day life can take it toll on our teeth - and tea, coffee, red wine and strongly-coloured foods are all common causes of staining and discolouration.

But many people can now benefit from a whiter, more youthful smile by using specially-developed tooth whitening agents - although, it is important to do this under supervision and after an assessment by your dentist, as whitening is not suitable for everyone.

The procedure itself is simple. To start, we will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth so that a plastic, close-fitting tray can be made that will fit snugly. About a week later (when the tray has been made by our technician) we will show you how to place a small amount of the whitening gel into the tray and how to fit it over your teeth.

After that, you take the tray and whitening gel home and use it overnight until your teeth reach the shade that you (with advice from your dentist) are aiming for. This can take 2-5 weeks, depending on the degree of whitening required.

We usually recommend whitening the upper teeth first. Then, once they have reached the desired shade, the lower teeth can be treated to match. That way, the upper teeth act as a reference point and it is much easier to see the improvement.

The process is usually painless and trouble-free - although you may find your teeth are more sensitive during whitening. If this occurs we recommend using a de-sensitising toothpaste.
