Care for childrens' teeth

Treatment and advice for children

Ideally, children should start visiting the dentist as early as possible, as this will help them to get used to the surroundings, smells and atmosphere in the surgery.

We can also give advice on brushing and diet. Children are treated free under the NHS.

It is important to encourage children to:

  • eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables at meal times, and drink only milk and water between meals;
  • avoid sugary snacks between meals - including fruit and fruit juice;
  • always discourage fizzy, sugary drinks as they cause tooth decay. They also contain acid, which can wear away tooth enamel;
  • NEVER put sugary drinks or fruit juices in bottles with teats, or give your child a glass of fruit juice to take to bed. The sugar and acid will work on the teeth overnight and cause major dental problems later.
